Picturerepresentin' amsterdam
looking only at results in continental competitions for from 1960/61 to 1964/65, with emphasis on the later seasons.

30. dundee fc (sco)    26,8
29. 1860 münchen (ger)    27,1
28. fc zürich (swi)    27,6
27. rsc anderlecht (bel)    27,6
26. dws (ned)    28,7
25. dinamo bucharest (rom)    30,0
24. manchester united (eng)    30,2
23. tottenham hotspur (eng)    30,9
22. galatasaray istanbul (tur)    31,4
21. rapid wien (aut)    33,5

even though they didn't take part in european competitions this season, the spurs still are in the list, just ahead of manchester. dws were in europe for the first time, and the quarterfinal in the european cup was enough to reach the top 30.

20. borussia dortmund (ger)    34,9
19. west ham united (eng)    36,1
18. as roma (ita)    37,6
17. dinamo zagreb (yug)    38,3
16. fc barcelona (spa)    40,0
15. sporting lisbon (por)    41,1
13. gyor eto (hun)    43,5
13. liverpool fc (eng)    43,5
12. atlético madrid (spa)    46,9
11. juventus turin (ita)    47,1

while juve climbed to their highest ever position in this particular ranking, fc barcelona dropped out of the top ten for the very first time. liverpool and gyor made the european cup semis and are therefore very high entrances on this list. the hammers are england's number 2 after winning their first continental trophy.

Picturehungary's number one
10. valencia cf (spa)    47,8
9. real zaragoza (spa)    48,5
8. rangers fc (sco)    48,6
7. 1.fc köln (ger)    48,9
6. dukla praha (czs)    52,8
5. ferencvaros budapest (hun)    54,3
4. ac milan (ita)    55,7
3. real madrid (spa)    88,2
2. sl benfica (por)    127,6
1. internazionale (ita)    140,7

the top four remain the same, but all changed places - now inter leads, first italian to do so in this ranking, while benfica is still in front of real madrid. dukla held 6th place but is now only the second best eastern european club, with ferencvaros, fairs cup winners, taking that honor. köln rise 15 spots to make the top ten, while rangers are back in the top ten, too. barcelona is now only the fifth best spanish club in europe!

current league rankings (1960-65): italy passes spain, hungary jumps to 6th

this ranking serves as a base to determine how much it is worth to win a domestic championship or cup. it represents how the leagues compared to each other at the end of the 1964/65 season.

20. greece    54,2
19. east germany    59,3
18. turkey    60,8
17. denmark    65,4
16. romania    67,6
15. austria    76,3
14. bulgaria    76,8
13. france    94,9
12. belgium    98,4
11. netherlands    98,9

first of all, greece replaced luxembourg in the top 20, coming back for the second time after finishing 17th in 1962. romania have their best ever placement in europe, same goes to bulgaria, documenting the ever growing force of eastern european football; in contrast, east german football reached a low point after dropping from 11th in 1962 to 19th, while denmark also had never placed worse than their new 17th place. belgium left france behind but only slightly failed to pass the netherlands.

10. czechoslovakia    104,9
9. switzerland    108,7
8. yugoslavia    126,2
7. scotland    149,8
6. hungary    157,2
5. germany    181,7
4. england    201,0
3. portugal    209,8
2. spain    299,8
1. italy    341,3

hungary was number 3 of the eastern european countries, but now they lead that particular ranking, leaving czechs and yugos behind. england passed germany after winning the cup winner's cup in a england x germany final. switzerland continued to climb and has placed inside the top ten for the fifth time in six years. but the big news is italy finally surpassing spain after winning the european cup three seasons in a row! 1965 therefore marks the first time the spanish league was not the best in europe.
